The most fun to shoot, in my opinion, the portrait gives the
photographer and the model a chance to interact, get to know one another,
and perhaps even to play. The challenging part for the photographer
during all this fun is trying to convey who the person is in a
single, or series, of photographs. On the other hand, the challenge
for the model is to relax and to be themselves. At times, the
photographer has only moments to 'get to know' the person, then capture
their spirit - that is what it's all about.
Jed, The Dog? He was easy! Jed is my neighbor.
Though you can't tell in this image, Jed was welcoming me home at lunch. His
front paws are on the fence separating our properties and he is looking at
me like 'Hey, Man! How's your day going? Do you want to come
scratch my ears?' I just happened to have a roll of film in my camera,
so snapped a picture of him. The image, however, captures perfectly
the personality of Jed - the loyal dog, always eager to please.
